Ruffled Apron Made from Old Clothes

My Princess loves dress up.  She has a box full of thrift store and hand-me-down dress up clothes.  But wanted an apron to use while she helps me cook.
So I came up with this apron using clothes that didn't fit anymore and scraps of material...costing me...nothing!
I started with this old shirt of mine.
And cut off the bottom of the shirt, using it as my base. It already had the strings attached from the tie-back shirt.
Next, I made and sewed on ruffles from
an old skirt,
a scrap of material.

and the last one was from an old shirt.
It was really simple and could be used for an adult too.

Mudroom Makeover - The Reveal

This has been a long time coming but I'm very happy to announce
THE MUDROOM REVEAL.
This all started here with a leak that caused extensive damage.
There was need for new and more insulation, new electrical work, and new flooring.  So, everything had to go.  The room went back to the studs.

At this point, things could only get better as we started putting things back together.

Ok, enough introduction...
Here you have it...My New Mudroom.

Here is how the "new" bench in the mudroom made it's evolution from changing table to bench...with 14 years of stops along the way.

My new sewing hobby helped in the process of making inexpensive curtains and pillow covers.

These dollar store boxes and the makeover gave us some extra storage and brought the room to life.

The work was done by My Better Half.  He has a desk job by day and is my personal handyman by night...gotta LOVE him!!
Thanks for being patient and sticking with me during this transformation.
What do you think??
Blessings,

Finishing Touches on the Mudroom

We are putting the finishing touches on the mudroom.  Curtains and pillows are the task at hand.  I made a trip out to the fabric store last week looking for material to make curtains and pillow covers and was blown away at how expensive material can be.  Several of the home decor fabrics were $44.99 a yard!!  I was carrying around a 40% off coupon but still yet, when I wanted 8 yards of the material...that was still completely out of the question.  So, I began browsing the rest of the store for something less expensive but something that would still look great...and I found something I love!
This material was in the quilting section and was only $5.99 per yard minus 40% making it just over $3.50 per yard...what a deal!!
I wasn't sure I wanted to be this bold with the curtains but now that they are done, I couldn't be more thrilled.

I also took some old couch pillows and covered them to make pillows for the bench in the mudroom.

I'm lovin' this new found sewing hobby.
I'm getting really excited for the big reveal.  We are almost finished, so don't forget to check back to see the completed room.
Blessings,

Sewing Projects - Pouches, Pillows, and Pretties

I am not a seamstress.  Ok, I'll be honest...I even had to call my mom to figure out how to thread my sewing machine!!!  You know what she said???  "Read the book!"  So I did and I threaded the machine, loaded a bobbin and sewed several small projects.  I'm pretty proud of myself I must say.  I picked up my sewing machine at a garage sale last summer for $10 which I thought was an awesome deal.  Then I found this sewing machine table at my ReStore for $4.  I want to fix up the table but that's low priority right now.

My first project was just to see if I could figure out how to use the machine.  I just made this little pouch for my princess to decorate with Sharpies and hold some of her stuff.
Next, I saw several tutorials on making pillow covers out of cloth napkins.  I had some cloth napkins in my closet that I wasn't using and so I game them a shot.  Here's what I did:

I took 2 cloth napkins and cut one of them in half.
Next, I laid them faces together and sewed around the edges.

My pillows were a little small so I went back around the outside of the pillow cover giving the inside about 1/4 inch less space, all the way around.
I'm thrilled with the results.  They were super simple!

My most recent and fun project was found at Lil Pink Pocket.  The creativity of people is absolutely amazing.  Use a simple button down shirt and make skirts from them...genius!
We were given some hand-me-downs (which I LOVE by the way).  A couple of the shirts wouldn't work for any of my boys so I created these great skirts for my princess.  All I needed to purchase for these was the elastic for the waistband...$1.67 for 3 skirts...not a bad deal!

I marked a line right under the arm holes and cut off the top part of the shirt.  Then I just added elastic to the waist and sewed it up.

And this is the end result.  Don't you just love how easy this is.  It literally took me 15 minutes (and I'm really slow).

I took the sleeve of the shirt and made a bow out of it.  I love it in my princess' hair.

I liked the first one so much I quickly made another and I have a pink one in the works from a shirt I picked up when I got my 100+ items at the fill a bag for $1 sale.
I think I can get used to this sewing thing and maybe even enjoy it.  Although this was my first sewing post, I don't think it will be my last.
Blessings,
