Wednesday's What I Found - Shabby Frugal Finds

I've been trying to stay away from thrift stores and my favorite ReStore lately.  If you've been following along for my organizational challenge, you know I'm purging and organizing rather than collecting more.  I will say however, that I have had a few moments of weakness and have purchased some little things.
My first and biggest purchase was actually made last fall so it doesn't count against me.
I had been looking for a trunk for my boys room and when I saw this one it was on sale at my ReStore and I knew I wouldn't be going home without it.
It stores a ton of stuff...their instruments, my youngest son's golf bag (it is new to him and he can't bear to put it in the garage yet!), and some bigger toys.
I used my old washboard in my laundry room makeover so I picked this little one up for $3 to have on hand for an unknown upcoming project!
The picture frame was only $.50 and I think they look so cute just sitting on a shelf empty.  Not sure if I will paint this one or add some chicken wire or something...the possibilities are plentiful!
This glass vase came in a set of two for only $.50.  I was so excited because I've seen so many ideas on pinterest for these and then a pillow fight broke out in my house and the set of two was down to one lonely vase...urggg!!  Oh well, I better enjoy these moments with the crazy boys because I'm sure I'll wish they were back when they're gone!
My old Folger's coffee can is my prize possession.  It was holding drill bits at ReStore and I asked one of the volunteers if they would sell it to me.  He threw a $.25 price sticker on it and it was mine!!  I love it in my coffee corner...so fun!
Have you found any great deals lately??  It's getting close to the end of the month and my local American Cancer Society Thrift store puts all their stuff 50% off the last few days of the month...I may just have to stop and browse.  I'll let you know if I find anything good!
Blessings,

Wednesday's What I Found - Beefy Greek Pita Folds

I got a bunch of new little cookbooks recently and have been trying out several of the recipes.  I don't really love to cook and so when I can find an easy recipe that mimics a more difficult one...I'm on board.  This was one of those recipes.
Every time we go to a fair or festival my Better Half is eager to get a gyro...holy cow, they're like $7 for one!!  Anyway, here's a yummy recipe that mimics that $7 gyro.
Beefy Greek Pita Folds (Pillsbury Cooking with Ground Beef - April 2000)
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 small onion, cut in half lengthwise, sliced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sliced ripe olives ( I will omit these next time...my kids picked them all out anyway!)
1/2 cup finely chopped peeled cucumber (I used a burpless one and just left the peel on)
1/2 cup chopped seeded tomato
1 (8 oz) container low-fat plain yogurt (1 cup)
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
4 (6 of 7 inch) soft Greek-style pita breads, warmed ( I used the pockets cut in half)

1.  In medium skillet, combine ground beef, onion, garlic, oregano and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt; cook over medium-high heat for 8 to 10 minutes or until beef is thoroughly cooked, stirring frequently.  Drain.  Stir in olives.

2.  Meanwhile, in medium bowl, combine cucumber, tomato, yogurt, dill and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt; mix well.

3.  Spoon 1/4 of beef mixture on half of each pita.  Top each with yogurt mixture; fold other half of pita over filling.  Serve with remaining yogurt mixture.
Makes 4 sandwiches

To save a few minutes at meal time, I fry my meat (I use turkey instead of beef), as soon as I get home from the grocery.

I drain it, then rinse it to get off all the excess fat and then place it in 1 pound bags.
I store it in the freezer for later use.
Anywho, these "gyros" were absolutely delicious.  The cucumber sauce was spot-on!!
Oh YUM!!
I'm trying another new recipe tonight...I'll let you know if it's any good.
Blessings,

Wednesday's What I Found - More Thrift and Frugal Finds

As you probably know by now, I'm always on the look out for a frugal find.  Whether it's a piece of furniture, a window, clothes, crafting supplies, or whatever, it's hard for me to pass up a deal.
This weekend while My Princess was at the Home Depot kid's workshop making this darling dry erase board, I spotted these Martha Stewart and Glidden paint samples.
They had a bunch of them in various colors all for just $.50...I snagged a variety of different colors for only $4!!!  These will certainly be put to good use in the future.
When I was in WV visiting my mom over the holidays I had to stop at her local thrift store.  This is the store where twice a year they have fill a bag for $1...this wasn't one of those times but I still found a couple great deals.  The first was on these Pillsbury cookbooks.
I got this whole lot for just $3...15 cookbooks in all!  These are each $4.99 at the store these days...what a steal!!
I also found my new purse that day.  $2.50 for this cutie.  It has several good size dividers inside, so my purse is more organized than ever!
Have you found any great deals lately??

Wednesday's What I Found - Thrift Store Fashionable Finds

Ok, it's confession time...I wear my PJs more than I don't.  I do not wear them to the store however or out of the house except maybe to the garage or back yard.  My goofy sister and I were going shopping one day and she came out to my car in her PJs to see if I would say anything...I was speechless, literally.  I was thinking "Oh DEAR, has she gone this far!!"  We stay-at-home and homeschooling moms teeter on the edge of sanity sometimes but that's a whole different series post.
When they let me I do leave the house, I like to look nice.  Gravity has had a strong pull over the past several years and so I'm trying to adjust my wardrobe but of course on the frugal budget.  If you're new here, I'm a HUGE thrift store, ReStore, salvage store shopper.  I've showed you some of my shopping deals in the past but this time I thought I'd show you how I put these thrift store finds together into some fashionable outfits.  Last week, my local American Cancer Society Store had 50% off everything in the store...I hit the jackpot!

Someone my size must have been getting rid of their entire wardrobe because I was able to get Aeropostle, Gap, Liz Claiborne, and many other name brand items for no more than $2.50 each.

Not too shabby for $4-$6 per outfit, huh?

Wednesday's What I Found - Super Easy Snowman Saw

Ok, I got these round sponges over the weekend with the strong desire to paint me some snowmen.
So, I was literally walking around the house this morning looking for something to paint snowmen on!!!  When I spotted these handsaws that I picked up at ReStore over the summer, I knew they would be perfect!

I dry-sponged (got the sponged wet with paint and then dabbed it off on paper) the entire saw giving it a snowy look.
Then I painted my snow mens' bodies.  These sponges make it really easy...although my first one turned out a little chubby...oh well, he'll fit right in around here!
After the paint dried, I took a paint pen and wrote my phrase..."Let it Snow".  You obviously could use whatever phrase you like...that's just the one that popped into my head.
Next, I gave the snowmen arms, buttons, and faces with permanent marker and then top coated it with a clear coat.
This didn't take anytime at all and will make a nice gift, I think.

I painted another one to have something on hand just in case I forgot someone on my list or maybe I'll keep it for myself.  It looks nice next to my toolbox!

Blessings,

Wednesday's What I Found - Rustic ReStore Finds

Just in case I need to remind you...I love ReStore.  I have had so much fun finding inexpensive and charming things to decorate our house.  This last week I almost didn't go but my Better Half called me from ReStore and encouraged me to meet him there...I am sooo glad I did.
My Better Half found the washboard while I spotted the crate and ladder.
The ladder was only $4 and I couldn't have distressed it better had I done it myself.
The crate was $4 also.

I've already put them both to use.  The crate is housing this precious snowman family my mom made for me.

The ladder is showcasing my Christmas cards.
I was really excited when I came down this morning and caught my son checking out the cards.  I'm not sure he would have paid attention had they not been displayed!
I.  Love.  ReStore.

Blessings,

Wednesday's What I Found - Christmas Curbside Find

"STOP!!!"
That's what my Better Half hears many days we are out and about.  I'm not yelling at his driving abilities.  He's a good driver...at least in the forward position...not so much in reverse. That's a whole different post though! I'm typically yelling STOP because I have just spotted someone's trash that is inevitably going to be my treasure.
When I spotted this beauty I really couldn't believe they were getting rid of it.  My Better Half actually went to the door to make sure that it was not decorating their trash can but that indeed they wanted it gone.

Do they not know that a simple swag of greenery...cut right from their own pine trees (which they had in their front yard - BTW) can make their trash look so beautiful!?  Maybe I should have suggested that to the owner instead of laughing with glee as I loaded it into my van.
Anywhoo, it's mine now!  I snagged a swag of greenery, cut from my own pine trees and tied it with a bow.

There you have it!
Their Trash...My Christmas Treasure.
Blessings,
