Vintage Frugal Finds

I haven't hit any good garage sales lately but a flea market and ReStore trip had me excited to find some fun deals.  I've been looking for a decently priced vintage kitchen scale.  So when I found this one, my son practiced his bargaining skills and talked the seller down to $10.
GREAT DEAL, HUH???
I L-O-V-E it!!
My next find was this cute pitcher.  I know it's not real milk glass but it looks like it and it was only $2.80 at ReStore.
Loooove It!!  You've probably seen it in my "Make Ahead Mixes" posts here, here, and here too.
My last vintage find was this nail apron.  When I bought the kitchen scale the lady threw in the apron for free...YAY!!

Have you found any cute deals lately?  I was at a thrift store today and they had 75% off EVERYTHING...but that's a whole different post!
Blessings,

Make Ahead Instant Oatmeal Mix

We started school at my house today and trying to get the kids ready can be hectic to say the least.  I'm not sure how we would manage if I had to get them out the door at the crack of dawn.  I do like for them to eat a healthier breakfast so they are not tempted to snack all day long.  We avoid cold cereal because of the cost so oatmeal is a GREAT alternative.  Instant oatmeal packets are not any less expensive than cold cereal so we've found the perfect way to get both the convenience of the packets at a cost we like.
Making them ourselves was the answer.
This is what you'll need for each "packet":
1/4 cup quick oats
1 teaspoon powdered milk
a pinch of salt
1 Tablespoon brown sugar
1 baggie
Measure out each of these ingredients in the baggie and you are good to go.
When you get ready to use, pour 1/2 cup of water and the contents of the "packet" in a bowl.  Microwave for 45 seconds or until you get your desired consistency.  Save your baggies for future use.
When I made up my packets, I used the assembly line method and was able to make up twenty packets very quickly.
Another option is to make up a big batch of the mix.  I did this also.
This way, my bigger boys could measure out as much as they wanted.  Here is the recipe for just over 20 servings.
5 cups quick oats
1/3 cup powdered milk
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
When you are ready to use this, just measure out how much instant oatmeal mix you would like and add twice as much water as oatmeal mix.
I'm really enjoying these packets at home and my better half is taking them to work as well.  It's a fast, yummy, healthier, cost-friendly way to go.

School Room Timeline

I'm getting ready for the start of the new school year and so I'm trying to spruce up my school room.  Last year, I showed you what my room looked like and directed you to my favorite part...the timeline.
I've learned that my kids do better with pictures than words, so I have changed the writing on my timeline to some easy to remember pictures instead.
I printed out pictures from most of the events that we have studied and then laminated them.

I posted them in chronological order on my timeline.

The new look is much more kid and memory friendly.  I hope it helps them remember the events and the order in which they occurred.  We are using The Mystery of History to study history in a chronological way...it really helps me put things in the proper order.
You can check out all my other curriculum choices here.
Happy School Year to all of you!!

Make Ahead Pie Crust Mix

I am certainly in the "Make Ahead" mood.  With school quickly approaching, I'm trying to find extra ways to save time and with these Make Ahead Mixes, not only do I save time, but money as well.
This Make Ahead Mix will come in handy in the months ahead as apple pies, pumpkin pies, and any other pies will be made for the holidays.
You can make this pie crust mix ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.  This is what you need for this recipe.
Make Ahead Pie Crust Mix
6 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 cups shortening (Crisco)
-Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl and then cut in the shortening. Once you cut in all the shortening, it will resemble a crumble topping.
-Divide evenly into three storage bags, placing just over 2 1/2 cups in each bag.
-When you are ready to use your pie crust mix, add about 5 tablespoons of cold water (sometimes I have to add a little more) to the mix, shape, and roll out for your pie.
-Each bag of mix will make two pie crusts.
If you don't want to divide your mix into three bags, you can leave it in one large, airtight container, and take out 1 1/4 cups of mix for each pie crust you make.  I store my mix in the refrigerator and it will last for a couple of months.
This will work with other pie crust recipes as well.  Try making up several of your favorite pie crust recipes at once.  It will save you time in the long run.
If you freeze your pie filling, like I showed you here, you can have a yummy pie ready in no time!!
