Decorated Summer Deck

Because we have a small home, I really look forward to Summer and the opportunity to entertain outside.  Many years ago My Better Half built a large deck on the back of our house and we use it A LOT during the Summer months.  I like to spruce it up and make it homey like the inside of our home.
With plenty seating, we have room to entertain a crowd.
With things that I had lying around the garage and yard, I was able to make a fun and comfortable atmosphere.
My ReStore Ladder, toolbox planter, and painted ReStore saws fit well together as a deck feature.
I was given this chaise lounger but it was horribly uncomfortable!!  So, I used a piece of insulation that I had left over from my two-sided canvas print to make it much more enjoyable!!
My amazing Better Half made both the planter bench and my picnic table.
 He's a keeper!!
Last Summer, I showed you this $5 Yard Sale rocking chair.  I had to recover it this Summer.  I covered it with a $2 vinyl table cloth.
It was a cheap fix and I have enough table cloth left over to use next year!
A family favorite deck feature is the way some of us get off the deck.

We got this slide when my kids were little and the deck was the perfect place for it.  Now that they are older, it doesn't get as much use.  Friends' children love to play on it when they come over now.
I like to plant flowers in all sorts of different containers...it gives such a fun, unique look.
The steamer pot on my table was pulled out of a dumpster...that was my first (and only, so far) dumpster diving attempt.  I'm pretty pleased with the results!!
Here are my Strawberry Planter Boxes, I showed you these a few weeks back.  I made 'em all by myself!!
So that's where we hang out during the Summer.
I sure love the sights of Summer...Don't you?!!

Two-Sided "Canvas" Photo

These Canvas Photos are all the rage right now and I wanted to jump on the bandwagon.  I'm so glad I did.  Mine is hanging in my basement and fits perfectly in our family room there.

My Better Half came up with the idea to make it a Two-Sided Canvas to get the most bang for our buck.
This is how we made it:
We bought a sheet of pink insulation and had an "industrial print" made of my two favorite pictures.  I had an industrial 3" x 4" print made at Staples and for black and white it was only around $4.  GREAT DEAL!
Using spray adhesive, I sprayed the back of the print...NOT the foam insulation.  Be careful for your over-spray as well.  I have an unusual line of adhesive on my living room carpet.  (Next post...how to get adhesive out of your carpet, just kidding...about the post, not the carpet!)
Lay it carefully on the foam and press out any bubbles.  This WILL require two people.  Don't bother trying it on your own...it will be a mess! Then use a utility knife to cut off the extra foam.
Now take black (or whatever color you like) acrylic paint and sponge around the edges. ( I used a sponge brush and just dabbed around the edges.)
After this side dried, I turned over my foam and did the exact same thing on the other side.  My Better Half then made a hanger for this cord and inserted it into the top of the foam.

Now, I can keep this picture up for a while,
And when I want a change, just flip it over to this picture.
Pretty cool, huh?! I got some very valuable tips for this project from Sugar Bee Crafts.

Bridal Shower Ideas

I had the privilege of attending a bridal shower this weekend.  It was for a precious young lady I have known since she was just a toddler.  She is beautiful both inside and out.  Her shower was beautiful as well.  I just had to show you some of the cute ideas that were used to make the shower extra special.
The tables were decorated simply, yet lovely.  Fresh flowers placed in mason jars were on each of the tables.
The darling little jars with handles were for our punch.  The black strip around them was painted with chalkboard paint.
There were pieces of chalk lying around on each of the tables for us to write our names on the jars and they were our gift to take home.  They each had a little stencil on the front of them.
All the tables had little cards on the table with Bible verses about love written on them.
Another table decoration was photo frames with photos of the happy couple and these easels with M&N ...the initials of the couple...so cute!
They had a darling drink station with a fancy punch dispenser and then a wash tub filled with ice and water bottles.
Hanging from the ceiling were pieces of printed paper with words like love, patience, joy and so on and their definitions.

It was a beautiful reminder of the real meaning of these words.
They had a chalkboard menu board with the delicious menu written on it.
The food was delicious and the menu board just added a nice elegant touch.
My favorite part of the decorations was the decorated mantel.

 The banner was darling!!
It was a lovely shower... One of the most creative I have been to and I loved every minute of it.
Wishing the happy couple all the very best that God has for them.

Drawer to Shelf

I grabbed this drawer at a garage sale a few weeks back for $2.  I knew immediately that I was going to use it for a shelf, I just wasn't sure where.
It came to me one day when My Princess came out of the bathroom and said that she just had to drip dry because there was no toilet paper...I know...too much information!
Anyway, here is that same drawer now being put to good use in the bathroom.
Pretty cute, huh?  Don't forget to think outside of the box drawer.

Necessities for a Natural Disaster

After a very relaxing week of vacation in Williamsburg, my family headed up to WV to spend a week at my parent's home.  As we were leaving Williamsburg, I got a phone call from my Mom (who was in Ohio at the time) saying she had heard there was a bad storm in WV and power was out in many places and wasn't sure what we would find when we got to their house.  My husband and I tend to be optimistic, so we assumed that even if the power was out, it would be back on by the time we made the four hour trip to their home.  WE WERE WRONG!  The closer we got, the more crowded the gas stations and restaurants were.  Electricity was becoming more and more scarce and we were seeing signs of serious damage...spotty, but damage nonetheless.
When we pulled onto my parents road, this is what we saw:

Seven trees uprooted and a yard (4 acres) FILLED with tree branches, the size of trees.  It looked like I would imagine a tornado to look.
It was one of the craziest things I have ever seen!  Although the yard was a disaster, the house was barely touched.  One piece of flashing was loose on the front of the house...that is it.  Not one chair flew off the deck.  Not one basket of flowers tipped over.  Not one hanging basket fell.  We attribute it to the hand of God...Nothing else.
The power was indeed off, for 11 days to be exact.   We learned A LOT  in the 8 days we were there helping clean up the mess and vacationing (yes, vacationing...one of the most memorable trips ever).
Most of all, we learned to be THANKFUL.
-Thankful that my parents were ok and weren't at home for the storm.  People lost their lives in this storm. -Thankful we had a generator.
-Thankful for food and water.
-Thankful for help.  My sister and her family were there and so was my brother and his family.  "Many hands make light work!"
-Thankful for wise men who thought to get gas before the stations ran out.
-Thankful for so much more!!!!

We also learned that we need to be more prepared for something like this.  My Better Half was an Eagle Scout and just has a lot of common sense so he handled this situation beautifully!  I've compiled a list of things I think are necessities for an extended power outage and disaster like this one.

1.  CASH - Without power and phone access, credit or debit cards were useless.  Cash was needed to make gas purchases and anything else we needed.
2.  WATER - With temperatures over 100 degrees that week, drinking water was so very important. Water to pour in the toilet so it can be flushed and water for cleaning are necessities as well.
3.  NON PERISHABLE PROTEIN - Peanut Butter and canned beans are good sources of protein and are great for a situation like this.
4.  BASIC FIRST AID SUPPLIES - Bandages, alcohol, peroxide, and an antibacterial ointment are all good to have on hand when cleaning up a mess or for any mishap.
5.  FLASHLIGHTS or LANTERNS - When street lights are out, it gets really dark at night.  Make sure you have some flashlights and batteries or lanterns and fuel for them.
6.  PROPANE BURNER - We used this all week long to cook for the family.  It was fabulous to have a cooked meal after a long day's work!  Obviously you will need to have propane bottles on hand as well.  Don't forget the pot to cook in, too!
7.  SOAP, WIPES, SANITIZER, and TOILET PAPER - You know why, right?!  Things get pretty nasty in 100 degree temps...this IS a necessity!!
8. FUEL - My Better Half quickly thought of this and went to the nearest gas station that still had gas and filled up our van and gas cans to run the generator.  This was priceless as the week progressed.  Without gas in your tank, you can only get so far if you are trying to get out of the area.  We saw people stranded at gas stations.  The gas stations were either out of gas or not running on generators and the people's cars were out of gas and couldn't make it to the next station.
9.  GENERATOR - I am listing this as a necessity although I know MANY people did just fine without one.  We were EXTREMELY BLESSED to have one and have fuel to keep it running.  We were able to flush toilets, have lights at night, and save everything that was in the freezers and refrigerator.  It's important to run your generator regularly to make sure it has no issues when a situation like this arises.
10.  PATIENCE - Everyone responds differently during a situation like this.  Some consider it good practice.  Some, a great adventure.  Others...just no fun at all.  Be patient with one another.  It can be a great memory making experience.

These are 10 things I am going to put in my stockpile for situations like this one.  I hope we never have to go through anything worse than this, but I hope I will be more prepared if we do!
Blessings,
