Cutest Craziest Hairstyle

My princess goes to Awana at our church.  Last week was crazy hair night.  She was looking all week for the perfect, crazy hairstyle and was thrilled when we found this one at Craftzine.

She looked absolutely adorable and it was so easy to do.
This is how I did it:
First, I put her hair in pony tails.  Next, I cut a wire that ran from one side of her hair to the other side and shaped it around her head. ( I used the wire that we are using to hang the ceiling in our basement.  You could also use an old coat hanger.)

I put one end of the wire through the pony tail I wasn't working with at the time...just to hold it still.
Then I took out the pig tail on the other side and started braiding.  I kept the wire in one of my three stands of hair as I continued braiding.

Then I just did it to the other side.  I cut off any extra wire and turned them up.

Isn't this adorable?!

Pippy Longstockings or Betty Lou Who anyone?!

Wednesday's What I Found - Bread Store Deals

I remember going to the bread thrift store with my mom when I was little and now that I have six mouths to feed, I frequent the one in my area.  One really nice thing about a bread store is that you know you are going to find bread at discounted prices.  It is always a surprise though as to what kind they will have and the prices based on their excess.  This trip was an especially good one.
This is what I got:
14 loaves Trader Joe's Wheat Bread
2 pkgs. Wheat Hot Dog Buns
2 pkgs. Kaiser Rolls
2 pkgs. Dinner Rolls
2 loaves Fiber One Bread
All for $10

I throw all of this in the freezer and it will last our family about three weeks.
Not bad for $10, huh?

Necessary New Flooring

We had just arrived home from a week of vacation at my parents earlier that evening.  So rested and relaxed after a week of very few if any stresses.  Good to be home however, and back in my bed...then I heard the sound...that sound that after four kids, I knew was not a good sound.  It woke me from a dead sleep but even still I knew it wasn't good.  And sure enough, I was right.  It was not good!!  My princess had become violently ill...ALL OVER THE PLACE!!  I have never in my fourteen years of motherhood seen such a mess!!!  It was all over her bedroom and all I could think to do was grab the camera!!  What is my problem??!
After the photo shoot I decided to begin the dreaded cleaning up task.  My Better Half called dibs on cleaning the Princess, I worked on the rest.  I won't go into details but it was bad!  So bad that the carpet would NOT come clean.  I scrubbed by hand and then with the carpet cleaner but it was not coming clean.  I decided in my half awake state to bleach the carpet to get the smell and stains out.  Let me just say for future reference...bleach, me, and the middle of the night do not go well together.
This picture doesn't do it justice.  I bleached white splotches here and there and everywhere on her cream but now clean carpet.  It looked horrible.
After getting it "clean", I went to bed.  I knew when I woke up that my creative juices would flow again and I would find some way to salvage this carpet.  I was wrong.  I got online and started searching blogs for painting carpet and realized that that was not my best bet or my most frugal one either.  So I got the "brilliant" idea to try RIT on the carpet and dye it.
Once again, not my best idea.  Looked terrible...somewhat like a mangy Barney.  After this failure, my Better Half reminded me of what might still be in the carpet padding and I decided I needed to tear up the carpet.  So with extreme optimism, I began to dream of what may be under the carpet.  The rest of this old house had hardwood floors when we moved in (old and worn hardwood floors I might add).  Maybe this room's floors were beautiful under the carpet and I would be uncovering this great treasure!!  OK, third strike...wrong AGAIN!!
Isn't this a beauty??!!  I was partially right.  The floors are hardwood (old and worn) but they are under this lovely peel and stick from decades ago!!
OK, enough is enough!!  I marched myself out to Home Depot, bit the bullet and decided to lay laminate flooring in her room and be done with it.  I couldn't decide between the carpet and laminate and then reminisced to that "sound" and knew laminate flooring would be best!

I'm so glad I did.  My Better Half and I worked together and got it all laid in about 4 hours and the results are faboo!

Don't you love it!?
These bumps in the road are rarely fun, but usually the end result is worth the bump!
Did I mention my dishwasher broke last week too??!!...BUMP!
Blessings,

Chicken Alfredo Lasagna

Ok, I know I've started several posts like this but...My Mom makes the best...Chicken Alfredo Lasagna.
This is my favorite meal in the world!  Although it is not a "save on your grocery bill" recipe because of all the delicious ingredients it requires,  it is a "save on your going out to the Olive Garden" recipe.  This recipe is better than ANYTHING you will eat at the Olive Garden.  (I know...it's an excuse to splurge on a really YUMMY meal)
While visiting my mom, we made it together.  We made extra so I had it for three days straight!  It is THAT good.  She doesn't remember where she got the recipe, so if she got it from you, I will gladly give you credit.  Frankly, I'd like to hug you because I think you are a genius and an AMAZING meal creator.
Ok, anywhooo, you want the recipe.  Here goes:

Sauce:
3 tablespoons butter
1 medium chopped onion
1 tablespoon of minced garlic
1 can cream of chicken soup (10 ounce)
1 jar Alfredo sauce (10 ounce)
1 can sliced mushrooms (6 ounce)
1/3 cup of apple juice
1 teaspoon basil

In a skillet melt butter over medium heat.  Add in onion and saute for about 5 minutes, adding in the garlic the last two minutes.  Stir in the cream of chicken soup, alfredo sauce, mushroom, apple juice, and basil.  Simmer over low heat for about 15-20 minutes.  Set aside 1 cup of sauce for the top of the noodles.
Filling
1 package thawed spinach (squeeze out the juice)
1 cup cottage cheese
1 cup ricotta cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 large egg (beaten)
In a bowl, mix together the drained, chopped spinach, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese, egg, and mozzarella cheese.
You will also need:
9 lasagna noodles, cooked
4 cups cooked chicken (cubed)
3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Place 3 cooked lasagna noodles in the bottom of sprayed 9x13 baking dish.  Layer with half of the alfredo sauce, half of the chicken, half of the spinach mixture, and 1cup of cheddar cheese.

Place three noodles on top of the cheddar cheese and repeat like the previous layer.  Top with the three remaining lasagna noodles and the cup of alfredo sauce you set aside earlier. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes.  After 45 minutes uncover and sprinkle 1 cup of cheddar cheese on top and bake until the cheese melts.
Let me know if you try it.  It is deeeeelish!
Blessings,

A Work in Progress - Our Kitchen

Our kitchen is definitely the most used room in out house.  When we bought the house, the fact that it was so small wasn't really an issue.  It was just my Better Half and I and so the small space was fine.
This is the kitchen shortly after we moved in 17 years ago.  At this point we had updated the counter top and added knobs to the cabinet doors.  We also installed the dishwasher.  I can't seem to locate pictures from before these changes.
This is a better picture of our pink counter top :)  Here we had upgraded to new Kraftmaid cabinets.  We live near the factory that makes them and at one point they offered the scratch and dent or returned cabinets to the community for a fraction of the cost.  We paid less than $500 for all new cabinets.
Since our family quickly grew from two to six, space became an issue and we began looking for ways to make our home appear bigger and give us more space.  We started taking out walls...sounds simple...not so much.  We took out the wall between our living room and dining room first and saw that it was very do-able (that's a future post).  So, we decided to try the wall between and dining room and kitchen.
If you look past my darling daughter and son you will see the wall that we are taking out.

This is demolition day.  Our walls were plaster so we were prepared for a big mess.  We really had no idea how bad it was going to be!!
There were cabinets mounted on this wall.  They had to come off before the demolition.

This is from the kitchen looking into the dining room. This wall is a load bearing wall so we had to replace the wall with a beam for support.  We built a temporary support wall until we could get the beam in place.
Check out all the dust in the air...ahhh, good times!
Gettin' Better!

The beam is in place and that mess is cleaned.  The rest of the demolition and 3 months of chaos was well underway!!
We wanted a bigger door and needed to move it toward the dining room to accommodate the new kitchen layout. (the refrigerator is going where that cabinet on the right is now)
Next, we gutted the kitchen.  We wanted to put new insulation in the walls.  It was EXTREMELY drafty in this old house!   This particular wall was not insulated at all!  The new insulation has helped our heating and cooling costs drastically.

After demolition, things started to get better.  The "putting back together" was promising.  I began to think that I may be able to quit washing dishes in the tub!
This is the placement for the refrigerator and the stove.  The stove is now where the sink used to be.  I can't begin to tell you how many times I have poured water on the stove...trying to find the SINK!
We laid new laminate flooring, hung drywall, and installed recessed lighting...which I LOVE!
We reused our old cabinets but repositioned them for a more practical layout.

Repurposing parts from an old pantry, we neatly hid our trash in this DIY rolling, under the counter trash can.
While putting cabinets in their new place we ended up with about a 5 inch gap between the stove and nearest cabinet so My Better Half made some little shelves out of plywood. I found these jars at a discount store and I store my flour and sugars in them.

We installed bead board on the lower half of the kitchen walls and I LOVE IT!!  It looks so clean, classy, and country.

The island was a factory, mass-produced island.  The top is made of 12 slate tiles which I hand picked and laid myself.  It was super easy and I am thrilled with the look.

We did all the work ourselves.  From drywall to plumbing and electrical.  It was honestly one of the hardest times in our marriage because we were so exhausted, tired of the mess, and ready to be finished.  I never dreamed the work it would be.  I do love the results and am thankful we survived.  I'm not sure that we will ever take on such a big project again, but we sure learned a lot.  Take a look at the finished product...

These are some of my recent changes:  Coffee Corner
I love having everything right at my fingertips and I'm thrilled with the coffee corner sign.
It adds a lot to the kitchen.
As you can see in this picture the update of my new ReStore Buffet turned Island, increased the character of the kitchen.
Don't you just love it!?  So much better than the factory one!!

These are all the changes we've made over the past 17+ years.  What do you think?
