Money Saving Tip of the Week

Trash, trash, and more trash.  With a family of six we have a lot of trash and we were paying almost $400 a year to get rid of it.  I decided to call our "trash remover" (Waste Management) one day to see if there was a way to save some money on our quarterly bill.

After talking about getting a smaller can and stuff like that, the representative asked me if I knew about paying my bill once a year instead of quarterly.  No, I did not know.  She continued to tell me that if I paid my bill for the entire year now that I would not pay fuel surcharges, environmental fees, or other added fees on my bill and instead would pay a flat fee of $20 per month.

WHAT??!!  No fees, no extras, no taxes, no nothing??  Sooo, that's what I did....$240 for the entire year...mine was August to August.  That's a savings of nearly $160...well worth my 10 minute phone call.

Will it work for you???  I don't know, you have to call and see.  It worked for my mom, my sister, and friends at church...even ones with different "trash removers".

It doesn't hurt to call!

Does $50 per week cover everything? Part 3of 3

This week I made three stops to conclude 4 weeks of tracking my grocery spending.

My first stop was CVS.
These were the only two items I picked up at CVS.  With my coupons and ECBs I spent $.94 OOP and got $8.99 ECBs.  Not a bad day!

Off to Giant Eagle...
Total spent at Giant Eagle $12.65 OOP ( I have $1.50 catalina to use on my next purchase)
See my post here for the complete break down

My final stop this week was Aldis.
These were just some necessities.  Total OOP $11.45
Other necessities earlier in the week were ketchup and sour cream at Walmart - $4.72

Bringing my total OOP this week - $28.82

This is the four week total spending and savings.
Week 1 - $62.64 (saving $188.31)
Week 2 - $69.92 (saving $132.92)
Week 3 - $45.45 (saving $94.37)
Week 4 - $28.82 (saving $54.68)
Four Week Total Grocery Spending - $206.83 (saving $456.78)
This averages out to be $51.68 per week.  I also have $8.99 ECBs to use at CVS and $1.50 catalina for Giant Eagle.
So YES, $50 covers everything!!

Don't Throw Out That Sunday Paper

In the 3/20 Plain Dealer on page A9 there was a coupon for $1 in fuel perks for any new or transferred prescription to Giant Eagle.  I found myself needing to get a prescription filled today and since I didn't think I would be needing my coupon I had to dig through the trash to get the papers out and find the coupons today.  I got my prescription filled and earned myself an additional $1 in fuel perks...that's a savings of $30 when you use those fuel perks on 30 gallons of gas.  Check your coupon for the restrictions.
Go dig for those paper!!!  Save yourself some more money!

Does $50 per week cover everything? Part 2

My 4 week - $200 grocery budget is just about gone.  I am encouraged knowing that both of my freezers are almost full, and I have added to my stock pile with various supplies such as 40+ boxes of cereal and 6 cases of diet pepsi, which I will not have to buy again for many weeks.  If you view my Giant Eagle receipt breakdowns you will see that my totals below are different from my GE receipts, that is because I make quick stops at Walmart, Aldi's, or CVS to pick up produce, milk, or misc. items.  All of those things are included in these totals.

Week 1 - $62.64 (saving $188.31)
Week 2 - $69.92 (saving $132.92)
Week 3 - $45.45 (saving $94.37)

Don't forget the Gift Cards at Giant Eagle!!

This is what a saw when I pulled into Get and Go this evening.  I almost passed out!  Doesn't this person have any fuel perks??  Who pays this much for gas?  Then I started realizing...this guy did have fuel perks...$.60 off per gallon in fuel perks.  Oh my word...his total was still $86.97.
I did the calculations... 30 gallons of gas at $3.499 per gallon would be $104.97.  WOW!  That hurts.  Which brings me to insert my GE Advantage Card...
Which do you think I pressed???
Yes, that's right $.699 per gallon!  How do I get so many fuel perks since I only spend about $50 per week at Giant Eagle?  That leads me to the title of this post ( I know, a little backwards).  Anyway, we own a 98 year old money pit of a home.  We frequent Home Depot.  We stop at Giant Eagle to buy gift cards for Home Depot before we head there to spend all our savings.  These gift cards count toward fuel perks.  So a $500 gift card for Home Depot costs me $500 but then I get $1.00 off per gallon of gas. ($.10 per $50 spent)
This is the sight the person saw after I left.  I was so excited.  Can you tell by all the pictures?  I got a few crazy looks from people wondering why I brought my camera and was taking pictures of the fuel pump and then laughing like a crazy woman!

30 Gallons of Gas - $3.499 Each = 104.97
Sale Price - $.699 Each = $20.97
Total Savings = $84.00

SO, the moral of this story is...buy gift cards at Giant Eagle, they really pay off.

21 Uses For That Toothpaste Stockpile

If you've been picking up all the freebie toothpastes in the last several weeks, I'm sure that your stockpile is well-stocked!!  I like to give it to non-couponing friends or donate it for care-packages.  A little search opened my eyes to the possibility of toothpaste as a cleaning product, skin ointment, deodorizer, and adhesive.  Check out these interesting uses for toothpaste.  I haven't tried them out yet...so I'm certainly not claiming they all work.  I did try the toothpaste on my iron yesterday and it got some of the black junk off the bottom, but it took a lot of elbow grease too.  I have also used it as a jewelry cleaner and have used it to clean my dry erase board.
-Let me know what you experiment with-

1.) Bee stings and insect bites ointment
2.) Removes crayon and other marks from walls
3.) Removes scratches from CDs and DVDs
4.) Treats pimples fast
5.) Cleans smells from your hands
6.) Prevents mirrors and swimming goggles from fogging
7.) Cleans sneakers and laces
8.) Cleans shower doors
9.) Fills in nail holes in walls
10.) Cleans dry erase boards
11.) Cleans piano keys
12.) Cleans clothes iron
13.) Deodorizes baby bottles
14.) Shines bathroom and kitchen chrome
15.) Removes ink or lipstick stains from fabric
16.) Removes watermarks from furniture
17.) Removes beach tar
18.) Deodorizes your car
19.) Polishes your nails
20.) Poster Adhesive
21.) Oh, I almost forgot...CLEANS YOUR TEETH AND GUMS!

Weekly Shopping

My dear sister who is also my shopping companion suggested that I post a picture of my goodies from our shopping trip last night and my grand total.  I try to stick to my $50 per week grocery budget...I may go over one week and then make up for it in the coming weeks. Last night I spent $53.04 with a Total Savings Today of $125.66.
I would love to hear about your weekly savings too.  I know some of you do way better than this!!

Saturday Outing

My husband has been telling me about this store in Newbury called ReStore.  It's a Habitat for Humanity store that sells all sorts of used and some new items.  Furniture, lighting, flooring, tile, cabinets, doors, housewares, appliances, and books packed this store.  If you like to fix things up, this is the store for you.  I went this morning and spent well over an hour just browsing.  I think their prices were pretty decent and I made a few purchases...hoping to get my "craft hat" on and do some decorating with some of the old items I bought.  They are only open on Friday and Saturday but it is worth a ride out to Newbury or a stop if you are on your way through town. They are open 9-6 on Friday and 9-4 on Saturday.
(FYI..this picture is not from the store in Newbury)
