If you're new to Saving 4 Six, I was given my grandmother's 1920s bedroom suit. I refinished and milk painted the dresser already. You can see that post here. The bedroom suit had been sitting in a barn for about 15 years after going through a fire and suffering some water and smoke damage.
This is what it looked like before. The soot was pretty thick on here. You can see the marks from the doily that was on the vanity during the fire.
I got it all cleaned up and then started painting the drawers and bottom of the dresser with milk paint.
Milk paint is my new friend. It is extremely durable and goes a very long way. I bought one pint of the milk paint and was able to paint the dresser and vanity with just that one pint.
| This is after I had roughed it up a bit |
Next I sanded down the top
and applied several coats of danish oil to it.
We finished it off by polishing it with wax.
This is the mirror before. It too was still covered in soot and needed some cleaning up.
The mirror got several coats of milk paint and a little roughing up and now it looks beautiful on the vanity.
The last part of the vanity is the bench.
This is the original bench that came with the vanity. It was numbered the same as the dresser and vanity. It was really interesting to see all the layers of material on the bench seat...some very unusual polyester and every shade of pink imaginable.
I milk painted the base of the bench...LOVE milk paint. Then covered the seat with a piece of material and a staple gun.
The outcome is super cute!
Ok, so it's darling in My Princess' bedroom!!
I love that My Princess gets to have and enjoy something that was her great grandmother's.
Blessings,

where do you get the milk paint??? I live in Maine and haven't seen any around here.. can it be ordered??? I love the vanity and your daughter is a lucky girl to have a beautiful set like that!!
ReplyDeleteGood job-looks great!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Tracey,
ReplyDeleteYou are able to buy the milk paint online. I purchased my Ultra Bond (the stuff you add to the paint to make it stick well on already finished surfaces) from realmilkpaint.com
Enjoy!
That is very pretty. Now you've got me addicted to your blog. Can hardly wait to see your next redo.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Carrie!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful piece! Can you please share what kind of wax you used? I've read people like to put wax on their finished painted & stained pieces but I can't figure out what kind of wax they are talking about, tyvm!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning! I'm so hooked on the white bottom and dark wood top....on anything! You do beautiful work!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great piece. I have never heard of milk paint- is it similar to chalk paint? Happy New Year! Visiting from TT&J.
ReplyDelete:) Samantha
To Kelly B:
ReplyDeleteThe wax I used was Johnson's Paste Furniture wax. It is excellent for stained or even unfinished wood, but not recommended for any painted surface.
Beautiful! My grandmother has a vanity like this and I have loved it all my life. I used to sit at it with her and she would put her perfume and lipstick on me when I was little. Sweet memories!

What a cute little piece! You brought it back to life ~ I love your makeover!
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with the vanity, mirror and bench. You made it beautiful and useable instead of treating the damaged finish as if it were sacred. So.....there's my childhood BR suite in my daughter's room and my grandmother's corner cabinet (dark, ugly).....
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to respond Carrie :)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful. At first you scared me by painting a 4th generation piece until you told of the damage. It turned out great.
ReplyDeleteWow! What an amazing transformation! You've inspired me to re-finish my (grandmother's) antique writing desk. :)

Absolutely gorgeous. I have a 1904 tredle sewing machine that was my great grandmothers. The cabinet is already painted and in rough shape. Perhaps I will look into stripping it and using milk paint when I get around to redoing it. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteLove the vanity! What color paint is on the wall? I love that, too!
ReplyDeleteHi Heidi,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I can't tell you the color of the paint. It was in the clearance section and just had the color painted on the top...no name.
