Out of necessity, I have kept my table covered with a table cloth for quite some time. It looked fine covered...but I really wanted to be able to uncover it and show its natural beauty hidden deep below many years of use!! :)) Since refinishing my steps, I knew I could refinish the table too. So I gave it a shot.
First I (actually, one of my sons) sanded down the whole thing. He did a great job...these teenage boys come in really handy!
Next I put a wood conditioner on the table before I stained it. Then I used the stain that I used on my staircase makeover. I put several coats on to get the desired look. Next, I sealed the table with a couple coats of poly urethane, danish oil and then several coats of furniture wax.
After the top was done, I painted the bottom portion with a black enamel* paint. I also painted the benches and chairs black too.
TAA DAAA!!!!
I love it...absolutely love it! I can't believe this is my table. It looks so classy yet country at the same time...hmmm, "country chic?" Maybe I'm on to something!?
***UPDATE...the black paint that I used to paint the benches, chairs and table base was a black enamel...not acrylic.

It looks Fabulous!! The black paint ties everything together too!
ReplyDeleteWe refinished our kitchen table, but my husband won't let me paint the chairs black even though it would look SO classy just like yours! Found you from, Not just a housewife!
ReplyDeleteI love this! Your table looks amazing and the black chairs are too cool!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I am still trying to get my husband to do our stairs. Please tell me how you put your poly urethane on without air bubbles?
ReplyDeleteHi Sherri, Oh I hope you get your stairs done! When I poly urethane I stir...not shake the container. This eliminates many of the bubbles. Also, between coats I use a scotch brite pad to sand away any imperfections. I hope this is helpful.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!! Your table looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteKathy
I love it! We have that same table only very light covered. That is exactly how I am going to refinish mine. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeletei would like to do this to our kitchen table as well. did you spray paint the black or brush paint?

ReplyDeleteThat looks fabulous. I really need to do it to mine, but I am so afraid to.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I feel like staining is my nemesis and you made it look easy:) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I recently did the same thing to my kitchen table. Same style, color, and everything! I'd love it if you'd come link this up at my Home and Family Friday linky party!

Looks beautiful - great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great makeover! It's amazing how much better the top looks now! I just refinished my farmhouse table this past week and I totally know that it's not an easy job, but boy are you lucky that your son sanded the table done for you. I would have put my son to work if he wasn't 7 months old. :) Here is the link to my makeover: http://www.migonishome.com/2011/08/3164-dining-room-makeover.html
ReplyDeleteBeautiful makeover--definitely country chic!
ReplyDeleteThat turned out great!

The tables looks brand new! I am currently sanding the paint off one of our doors- it's turning into a big project with all the grooves!I'd love it of you'd share this with WorkShop Wednesday. It woud make a great addition to the party!
ReplyDeleteDid your table, which looks awesome and inspired me to do the same someday, come with those benches? I need to replace non-kid friendly chairs and am thinking benches would work for our crew.
ReplyDeleteAwesome job....I want to redo my table as well and you just gave me a boost to do it now. Thanks...now all I need to do is get the hubby to agreee and help out now hahaha. Again awesome job :o)
ReplyDeleteDo all the coats of stain, poly, wax etc render the table "kitchen proof" ...I mean will it be durable and scratch/stain proof?
ReplyDeleteWow! Your table & chairs looks great. A have a couple of queations ~ what type of acrylic paint did you use on them? Were the table & chair bottoms painted to begin with? They look in pretty good shape (the bottoms)in you photos, did you just touch them up or do a complete color change? I am wanting to paint mine but hubby is resistant as there's no damage to them (we are empty nesters) ~ I'm just wanting a change. Thanks ~ Deborah
ReplyDeleteMichelle - The stain, poly, oil, and wax render the table to be as "kitchen proof" as wood can be.(says my better half) The wax makes it easier to rub out any scratches...I have seen that first hand. However, the wax keeps me busy rubbing off any fingerprints because I want it to stay shiny and look like new.
ReplyDeleteDeborah - I used an enamel paint for the chairs, benches, and base of the table. I had to add an update to the bottom of this post because when I wrote the post, I wrote the wrong kind of paint. Sorry for the confusion. The base of the chairs and table was green and the seats were stained. The base of the benches were black and the seats were stained so I repainted all of them.
I hope this is helpful. Thanks for visiting Saving 4 Six
Nicely done! I have a round version of that look... but a chair is destroyed and I need to get a new one... only finding the black and dark wood version. So I am planning on redoing my white & light wood set! :) Thanks for sharing!

Your table looks exquisive!! It's amazing what you can do with the right equipment and patience.
ReplyDeleteStuart
I, too, have 3 boys and a girl that I homeschool and the exact table and chairs. Coincidence? Ha! But my table is white with a wood top and looking pretty shabby... I may just have to "copy" you some more!
ReplyDeleteDid you have to sand those curvy legs on the table & chairs before using the enamel. I have a bad looking table & chairs, and the legs are all curvy like the ones on yours.
ReplyDeleteIn regard to sanding the legs, I did "rough up" the legs...just by lightly sanding. Mostly just to get the "crud" off from years of spills and splashes. I did not sand them down like I did the top.
ReplyDeleteCarrie I love this table. I have a table and chairs and I am going to redue and this is just one of the style of paint combination I am thinking of. I may have questions for you about a few things later when I actually start to redue. It is beautiful, you did a great job.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!! Your table looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteApparently, we have some things in common (other than homeschooling four children!) - the look of your table is exactly what I want to do with my kitchen table. I absolutely LOVE what you did with it. It looks professionally done! I'll have to show this to my hubby so he doesn't think I'm crazy when I tell him I want to paint the chairs black. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt came out BEAUTIFUL! I have the same table and chairs in tan/white, do you think that a black spray paint would be ok on the chairs, and if so do you think they need to be sprayed with a protective clear?
ReplyDeleteIt came out BEAUTIFUL! I have the same table and chairs in tan/white, do you think that a black spray paint would be ok on the chairs, and if so do you think they need to be sprayed with a protective clear?
ReplyDeleteI think spray paint would be ok however, I think an enamel would be BEST. A clear protective coat could not hurt. It would offer the extra protection for the chairs that get so much use!
DeleteI also have a similar table with 6 chairs only they are light wood and white. I would like to refinish using a darker stain with black (like yours). Did you have to sand the chairs or use a primer prior to painting them black? Also, how many coats of black did you have to do? Thanks so much for the help!
ReplyDelete~Chelsey
Hi Chelsey,
DeleteIn regard to sanding the legs, I did "rough up" the legs...just by lightly sanding. Mostly just to get the "crud" off from years of spills and splashes. I did not sand them down like I did the top.
Because I was applying enamel paint to enamel paint it was not necessary to use a primer.
I put 2-3 coats of paint on them. Mostly two but I saw a couple spots I missed so I had to go it some of it a third time.
This looks fantastic!!! We are about to embark on refinishing ours because I spilled nail polish remover all over ): I was hoping you could tell me what color stain you are using on the top? I bought Cabot brand stain in Cherry and it looks way too red. so I was hoping to find out the color of yours!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. OH NO...nail polish remover!!!
DeleteWe used Minwax Wood Finish Red Chestnut 232
I also used that same color on my staircase makeover. You can check out the way that color looked here... http://www.saving4six.com/2011/06/staircase-revealed.html
Best Wishes
Thanks for your help!! Your table was our inspiration. We had never done any type of home projects before. In fact, we had never even used a sander or paint brush! lol. Here is our result. The left is the before (notice the white nail polish stain) and the right is the after. Don't mind the messy garage!

DeleteYour table looks wonderful! Would you care to share what brand of paint you used on the legs and chair?
ReplyDeleteWe are Sending our two "home schooled for life" girls off to college and we did a thrift store run looking for tables for their apartment. What we found match your dining table - even to the green legs. Paid total 26 dollars for coffee table, end table and another side table.
Tops were in rough shape but sanded down nicely. Legs actually look pretty good but the girls prefer black. They wanted to just paint but I figured we needed to rough them up a bit. Your comment about using enamel over enamel (and therefore no primer) was helpful, but found looking for paint confusing. There seems to be oil and water based enamel. Is one better than the other? What did you use?
WOW!! What a great deal you got! Homeschoolers for life...love it! I have two high schoolers this year and two younger. I'm ordering curriculum like a crazy woman and just turned in my paperwork to the county today...busy, busy, busy!
DeleteThe paint that I used on my table, my hope chest, sewing table, and much more you can find on my blog was Rust-oleum Satin Black. Here is a link to a picture of the can. http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=162
Each of these things have held up BEAUTIFULLY. I would highly recommend this paint (no one is paying me to say that).
Best wishes on your project and your girls college experience.
Blessings.
Hey, Carrie! I just found your blog through your dining room table being on Pinterest. I love what you did with your table! I paint furniture all the time but I've never actually stained anything. What brand and color did you use for the stain on the table top? I would also be interested in the kind of wax and poly you used. I'm loving your blog and I'm now your newest follower. :) ~ Jamie
ReplyDeleteHi Jamie, Thanks so much for the kind comments about my blog and table too!
DeleteWe used Minwax Wood Finish Red Chestnut 232 for the staining of the table.
I also used that same color on my staircase makeover. You can check out the way that color looked here... http://www.saving4six.com/2011/06/staircase-revealed.html
For the poly urethane we used Minwax and the wax was Johnson's Paste Wax. It is for furniture. I hope this helps.
Blessings
It looks beautiful, just one question, did you sand the chairs before painting them?
ReplyDeleteIn regard to sanding the legs and chairs, I did "rough up" the legs and ...just by lightly sanding. Mostly just to get the "crud" off from years of spills and splashes. I did not sand them down like I did the top.
DeleteAn amazing look of table.....these are so cool.
