Weekend Project - ReStored Buffet Turned Island

Have I told you lately, I love me my Restore?!  My Better Half and I were there this evening and were loving every minute of it.  I picked up a few more cabinet doors to use for projects like my Bathroom Rules Sign .  I also got some other nice little odds and ends that you will see at a later date.  While we were at ReStore this evening, one of the workers asked us if we came knowing what we were looking for (with a project in mind) or came to be inspired.  My Better Half assured them that it was both.  We certainly have a list of things that we are looking for to fix up this old house but most often the inspirational stuff is way more fun.
Last week at ReStore was an example of one such inspiration.  I am looking for something for my entryway.  Something to store the boatload of shoes that lines the room.  I saw this buffet that I thought might work but was not ideal for the small space.  It did cross my mind while looking at it that it would make a beautiful island between my kitchen and dining room.  We picked it up and headed home.  I immediately had My Better Half put it in the entryway where I did not like it at all!!  I gave him those please, oh please, eyes (yes, I know it's manipulation) and asked if he would move it to the kitchen.  VOILA!! A perfect fit.

This is what it looked like when we moved it to the kitchen.  I knew it needed some serious work but I could totally see the potentional.  We removed the loose, broken veneer to find beautiful wood that we were able to stain to match the rest of the buffet perfectly.  We removed the top from the island we had in place and it fit by just sawing a little off the top of the buffet.  I made the top from our other island a couple years ago when we remodeled our kitchen and knew it would look great on the new island.

Ok, so this is what my island looked like before.  Just a boring, manufactured, too small bottomed island. 

It's so funny, I didn't know I "needed" a new island until I saw this one in place and now it is PERFECT.
